What is Feldenkrais?
A way of learning to move better.
This helps all sorts of people such as actors and singers, dancers and athletes.
Lots of children need to learn how to move in a more efficient way so that they can run more easily, or sit more comfortably in school.
People who are ageing need to learn how to get up and down stairs more easily, or get in and out of bed and chairs and cars so that their joints don’t hurt.
How does this differ to going to the gym to gain more muscle strength or going to yoga classes to gain more flexibility?
You could be strengthening forever and still be moving in a poorly co ordinated way.
You may actually be practising your bad habits very regularly… learning your bad habit really well…
Lots of people who are very flexible have a lot of pain and do not move comfortably.
They can benefit by learning to move only as much as they actually need to.
Moving gracefully and easily is something you need to discover from inside of you. It is quite a different thing to acquiring strength or flexibility. It is more a part of the nervous system and how everything co-ordinates together.
So how would I go about doing this?
Feldenkrais practitioners run classes ( which we call “awareness through movement classes”) or individual sessions ( Functional integration sessions). They also conduct short workshops usually on various themes such as back care and lifting or pelvic power ( for incontinence) or voice /singing workshops…. All sorts of things. This work helps an enormous variety of things we do. It is very helpful for things we do every day in our lives…. Even very simple things like how we get out of bed or put our shoes on.
